Both U.S. and Canadian residents require a prescription to purchase Taxotere and when you order Taxotere it will be delivered with express shipping.

How does Taxotere work? What will it do for me?

Docetaxel belongs to the group of cancer-fighting medicines known as antineoplastics, and specifically to the group of antineoplastics known as taxanes. Docetaxel causes the death of cancer cells by interfering with the genetic material DNA which is necessary for their growth and reproduction. Docetaxel is used alone or in combination with other antineoplastic medications for the treatment of cancers of the ovary, breast or lung. It may also be used to treat head and neck cancer after failure of a previous chemotherapy treatment.

Your doctor may have suggested Taxotere for conditions other than the ones listed in these drug information articles. If you have not discussed this with your doctor or are not sure why you are taking Taxotere, speak to your doctor. Do not stop taking Taxotere without consulting your doctor.

How should I use Taxotere?

The recommended dose and dosing schedule of docetaxel varies according to the specific type of cancer being treated, the response to therapy and the other drugs or treatments being used. The dose is also based on body size. Docetaxel is usually injected into a vein through a site on the skin that has been prepared for this purpose. It is often scheduled to be given over a one-hour period once every three weeks.

Many things can affect the schedule of medication that a person needs, such as body weight, other medical conditions, and other medications. Docetaxel is always given under the supervision of a doctor. Very careful handling of Taxotere is required. It is always administered in a hospital or similar setting with access to sterile equipment for preparation.

As well as interfering with the DNA of cancer cells, docetaxel can interfere with some of your normal cells. This can cause a number of side effects such as hair loss and mouth sores. Docetaxel often causes mild nausea and vomiting, but it is important to keep using Taxotere. Your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist can advise you on how to reduce the effects of nausea and vomiting. Before your dose of docetaxel, you will be given some medication to reduce the symptoms of side effects. Keep track of any side effects and report them to your doctor as suggested in the section, "What side effects are possible with Taxotere?"

Who should NOT take Taxotere?

Docetaxel should not be used by:

anyone allergic to docetaxel or the other ingredients
anyone who has a very low level of neutrophils (a type of white blood cell) in their blood
people with severe liver disease

Are there any other precautions or warnings for Taxotere?

Infection: As well as killing cancer cells, Taxotere can reduce the number of cells that fight infection in the body (white blood cells). Avoid contact with people who have contagious infections (e.g., colds, flu) and tell your doctor if you begin to notice signs of an infection such as fever or chills.

Blood clotting: Taxotere can reduce the number of platelet cells in the blood. Platelets help the blood to clot, and a shortage could make you bleed more easily. Tell your doctor of any signs that your blood is not clotting as quickly. Such symptoms may include black and tarry stools, blood in the urine, easy bruising, or cuts that won't stop bleeding.

Liver disease: People with impaired liver function may experience increased side effects from docetaxel.

Pregnancy: Effective birth control should be practiced while using Taxotere. Taxotere may harm the baby if used during pregnancy. Tell the doctor immediately if you become pregnant while using docetaxel.

Breast-feeding: It is not known whether docetaxel passes into breast milk. Women should not breast-feed while using docetaxel.

What other drugs could interact with Taxotere?

The following medications may affect how docetaxel works or increase the risk of side effects:

amphotericin B
azathioprine
colchicine
cyclosporine
erythromycin
flucytosine
ganciclovir
interferon
ketoconazole
itraconazole
midazolam
orphenadrine
plicamycin
testosterone
troleandomycin
other cancer medications
zidovudine

Docetaxel may affect how vaccines work or increase the chance of side effects.

If you are taking any of these medications, speak with your doctor or pharmacist. Depending on your specific circumstances, your doctor may want you to:

stop taking one of the medications,
change one of the medications to another,
change how you are taking one or both of the medications, or
leave everything as is.
An interaction between two medications does not always mean that you must stop taking one of them. In many cases, interactions are intended or are managed by close monitoring. Speak to your doctor about how any drug interactions are being managed or should be managed.

Medications other than those listed above may interact with Taxotere. Tell your doctor or prescriber about all prescription, over-the-counter (non-prescription), and herbal medications that you are taking. Also tell them about any supplements you take. Since caffeine, alcohol, the nicotine from cigarettes, or street drugs can affect the action of many medications, you should let your prescriber know if you use them.
